British troops yesterday raided this Jewish settlement which has a population of about 10,000 and carried out a house-to-house search for hidden arms, as well as terrorists who allegedly fled from Tel Aviv to Ramath Gan following Thursday’s attacks.
No important terrorist suspect was found and no arms were discovered. Nevertheless, a curfew has been imposed on the entire municipal area of Ramath Gan adjoining Tel Aviv, which is to remain in force until further notice.
The raid started before dawn, when a military cordon was thrown around the settlement, closing all roads. Armored cars, equipped with loud speakers, than appeared in the settlement, announcing that a strict curfew was in effect, and that the population was to remain where they were.
During the house-to-hose search, which lasted for many hours, every male between 16 and 40 was detained. About 1,100 of them were placed in a police cage and questioned, but only 59 were unable to give a satisfactory explanation of their presence here. They were removed to a separate cage under strong military guard.
