A request that the United States Government withhold recognition of Transjordan’s independence was submitted today to Secretary of State James F. Byrnes by Dr. Abba Hillel Silver and Dr. Stephen S. Wise, joint chairman of the American Zionist Emergency Council.

“We earnestly request that before the United States Government takes any action on the issue of Transjordan’s independence and eligibility to membership in the United Nations, we be given a hearing to present the facts in the situation,” Dr. Silver and Dr. Wise said in a telegram to Mr. Byrnes.

The Zionist leaders pointed out that on Jan. 31, 1946, shortly after Foreign Secretary Bovin’s announcement of the British Government’s intention to recognize Transjordan’s independence, they submitted a memorandum to the State Department in which they pointed out that separating Transjordan from Palestine would violate the territorial integrity of the former, the Palestine Mandate, Article 80 of the UNO Charter and Anglo-American agreements of 1924 and 1945.
