Rabbi Ahron Opher, assistant to the president of the Synagogue Council of America, which represents the Orthodox, Conservative, and Reformed Jewish bodies in the country, resigned at a plenary session of the Council, it was announced here.
Rabbi Opher, who was in effect the executive director of the Council for the east three years, said he was resigning because of “the insurmountable difficulties face by the Synagogue Council in its efforts to effectuate a strong and united religious spokesmanship for American Jewry.” He expressed regret that Jewish communal, philanthropic, political and defense programs are in the hands of secular agencies, rather than the synagogues, and said that the religious groups themselves are “reluctant to yield” to an overall body some of their activities.
