The Joint Distribution Committee has appropriated $25,000,000 for relief activities abroad since the beginning of 1946, Dr. Joseph C. Hyman, executive vice-president of the JDC, revealed today at a meeting of 500 Jewish leaders in the Palmer House here.
The largest sum allocated to one country was $4,000,000 assigned to meet the needs of the Jews in Poland, Dr. Hyman said. He stated that the most pressing relief problem in Europe today was that of the more than 100,000 Polish Jews returning to Poland from the USSR. He said these refugees deserve as much attention as the displaced Jews in Germany. Discussing the position of the 1,500,000 Jews in Europe, the JDC leader called on their respective governments to speed restoration of their economic and political rights as that they may be enabled to rehabilitate themselves.
The meeting voted to form a West Central Region of the JDC. Benjamin M. Loeb of St. Louis was elected chairman.
