Egypt will not surrender the ex-Mufti of Jerusalem who “arrived suddenly” last night seeking sanctuary at King Farouk’s palace, and who is now staying at the King’s Inchass estate, an hour’s drive from Cairo, it was officially announced today by Sayed Loutfy Pasha, Egyptian Foreign Minister.
The Foreign Minister made this announcement following a special session of the Egyptian cabinet which discussed the ex-Mufti’s request for sanctuary. “We consider the Mufti a political refugee to whom Egyptian law grants asylum,” he stated. “Britain has made no request to Egypt to hand over the Mufti, and even if one were received, it would be rejected.”
The British Minister in Cairo, Reginald J. Bowker, called at the Egyptian Presidency a few minutes before the meeting of the cabinet. After seeing Prime Minister Ismail Sidky Pasha, he told correspondents that his visit had nothing to do with the “Mufti case.”
