The Egyptian Government has thus far declined to give any binding undertaking that Haj el Amin Husseini, Mufti of Jerusalem, will not be allowed to leave Egyptian territory for any other part of the Middle East whenever it suits his plans, reliable sources said today.
The demand that the Mufti should not be allowed to leave Egypt was one of a series of requests, including one that he refrain from political activities, that Sir Donald Campbell, the British ambassador at Cairo, presented to Premier Sidky Pasha.
The contention of Egypt appears to be that since the Mufti is now King Farouk’s “personal refugee,” following his escape from France, the government is unable to agree to any undertaking that would be binding on the King.
