Sidney Hillman, president of the Amalgamated Clothing Workers and chairman of the Political Action. Committee, who died this morning at his summer home on Long Island, was described today by President Truman as one of the “most efficient and devoted exponents” of the cause of democracy in this country.

In a statement issued here the President said: “Sidney Hillman was more than a distinguished labor leader; he was a great humanitarian and an outstanding statesman in the field of labor-management relations. That he, an immigrant youth, could rise to eminence in the land of his adoption is a tribute at once to his own ability and character and to the democratic ideals for which he fought.”
