President Truman’s statement on Palestine was welcomed yesterday by the London Times which called his proposal for increased DP immigration to the United States “courageous.” The newspaper also said that the “Jewish Agency’s display of readiness to join in the London round-table discussions on Palestine is a welcome and encouraging contrast to the uncooperative attitude of the Jews in Palestine.”
The Manchester Guardian attacked the President’s statement as “cold comfort,” saying that Truman made it clear that the “United Kingdom stands alone in facing the Palestine problem. Compared to Truman’s faint promises,” the newspaper added, “even the British camp in Cyprus may have a certain solid reality.”
