Reports from Somers, N.Y., a small up-state community which lies within one of the areas under consideration as a site for United Nations headquarters, disclose that anti-Semitic groups have threatened to destroy a synagogue being constructed by the local Jewish community, which consists mainly of summer residents.
According to Rabbi Kalman Kahn, head of the congregation, unidentified persons cut down a sign on the synagogue site, which read: “On this site will be built a house of worship sponsored by the Hebrew Congregation of Somers” State police are investigating the incident, as well as rumors that the synagogue would be burned down, should it be completed.
