Mrs. Eleanor Roosevelt, writing in her nationally syndicated column, today declared that the deportation to Cyprus of Jews who seek entry to Palestine was causing many Americans to feel “unhappy.”
Pointing out that the refugees are attempting to rebuild their lives in Palestine, Mrs. Roosevelt said that the country does not belong to Britain, which only governs it under a mandate. While deploring the fact that the Jews have resorted to force, she asserted that it “is not hard to understand” that people will retaliate when a show of force is made against them. “The British have certainly had force in evidence in Palestine,” she added.
Declaring that partition does not appear to be any answer to the Palestine problem, Mrs. Roosevelt said that the Jews were asking that they be permitted to keep what they have plus a very small increase in land for economic needs and to be allowed to take in the refugees.
