President Truman’s proposal to permit the entrance of 50,000 displaced Jews from Europe to the United States, was attacked here by the United Zionists-Revisionists in a statement which labelled the plan a “smoke screen to cover the vague, vacillating and ineffective policy” of the U.S., calculated to divert public attention from the “real issues of the Jewish tragedy.”
In a telegram to Acting Secretary of State Dean Acheson, Major William R. Friedman, vice-president of the organization, urged intervention with the British Government on behalf of the 18 Palestinian Jewish youths sentenced to be executed for participation in a raid on the Haifa railroad yard. The telegram charged the British with “deliberately” seeking to provoke a general Jewish revolt in Palestine.
