“The British Labor Party has declared war upon Palestine’s Labor Party,” Zalman Rubashov, a leader of the Histadruth and editor of Davar, largest newspaper in Palestine, declared today at the opening session of the national conference of the Mapai, Jewish Labor Party. Six hundred delegates attended the conference.
The meeting adopted a resolution of greeting and encouragement to the imprisoned Jewish Agency leaders and to the Jewish visaless refugees interned on Cyprus. It elected the detained Jewish leaders to the honorary presidency of the conference.
Rubashov, speaking of their arrest and imprisonment, declared: “Palestine Labor will not rest until our leaders are freed and we will continue to fight with them until stage after stage of Jewish independence and Jewish statehood is achieved. Our arms are arms for defense. Jewish existence in the Diaspora is possible only as Marranos, but we are not prepared to allow Jews in Palestine to live as Marranos.”
Hayim Greenberg, American Zionist labor leader, greeted the conference in the name of American labor. Goldie Meirson, political chief of the Jewish Agency, reported on internal and external problems facing the Zionist movement. One of the chief problems facing the conference is the policy of non-cooperation with the government. The policy has not yet achieved the unanimous support of all sections of the Jewish community.
