A large land mine exploded tonight on the Haifa Tel Aviv road, near Nathanya. First reports said that a military truck was blown up.
The blast followed a warning issued last night by the Stern Group that “guerrilla warfare” against the British would be intensified. It said that all military vehicles would be blown up.
Eliezer Kaplan, who has just returned from London where he was one of the Jewish Agency negotiators who met with Colonial Minister Arthur Creech-Jones, conferred today with High Commissioner Sir Alan Cunningham at the latter’s request. The subject of their talks was not disclosed, but Kaplan was given permission to visit the imprisoned leaders of the Agency in the Latrun prison and report on the London negotiations.
The Agency executive met this morning to hear a report from Kaplan and Rabbi Judah L. Fishman, another of the negotiators. The Small Zionist Actions Committee is now expected to convene after the elections for delegates to the World Zionist Congress, which are to be held here on Monday.
A report from Cyprus says that the freighters Ocean Vigor and Empire Rival arrived in Famagusta this morning with the 800 Jewish refugees from the schooner Alma, who were transferred to the freighters in Haifa harbor yesterday. There are now more than 5,000 refugees interned in Cyprus.
Chief Rabbi Isaac Herzog, speaking before the Tel Aviv municipal council today, thanked the French Government for making 5,000 visas available to Jewish refugees from Poland. He urged nations to admit refugees and appealed to UNRRA to continue to help the displaced Jews until they can come to Palestine.
