Arab protest strikes marking the 29th anniversary of the Balfour Declaration passed without incident yesterday in Egypt, Palestine, Lebanon and Syria.
Police in Cairo, where violence was feared, took special precautions to avert any rioting and excesses such as the burning of a Cairo synagogue which occurred last year during Balfour Day demonstrations. Police were ordered to shoot looters and rioters, but no such action was necessary. This city was out of bounds to all British troops during the strike.
In Palestine the day was marked by several parades and demonstrations and the Arab Women’s League presented a petition calling for abrogation of the Balfour Declaration to the Palestine Government. Strikes and demonstrations were also held in Beirut and Damascus.
