Jewish Agency Says Flogged British Officer Was Doing His Duty

Commenting on the “reprisal” flogging of a British officer and three soldiers yesterday by the Irgun Zvai Leumi, a Jewish Agency spokesman here said today that use of the word “reprisal” was incorrect since it “might convey some question of equality, while actually on one hand there is a gallant officer carrying out the discipline of his nation, and on the other hand there are the terrorists repudiating the discipline of their nation.

Declaring that “the terrorist groups have no conception of the rancor they let loose when they attack the pride of the army in this way,” the spokesman added that while the Agency would be prepared to make a strong fight against the introduction of flogging into the Palestine judicial system, “when people take the law into their own hands they forfeit all considerations.”
