In a brief filed today with the New York State Committee Against Discrimination, the American Jewish Congress challenged the contention of Columbia University that its placement service was outside the Committee’s jurisdiction since it was operated by an educational institution.
Columbia admits that its employment form contains questions on race, religion and nationality, which are illegal under New York’s anti-discrimination law, but claims that it is permitted to follow this practice because the law does not cover educational institutions. In its brief, the Congress points out that the placement service operates like any other employment agency, securing positions in outside industry for students.
The Commission on Law and Social Action of the Congress today released the replies of 32 state governors and other officials to an inquiry concerning the status of the Ku Klux Klan in their states. Ten said that they would take any necessary legal action to suppress it, 14 replied the KKK holds no charter in their states and 8 reported that it was inactive.
