Henry Morgenthau, Jr., for twelve years Secretary of the Treasury, has accepted the invitation to become General Chairman of the United Jewish Appeal which has undertaken to raise $170,000,000 in 1947, it was announced today.
In a statement issued on the acceptance of leadership of the drive, Mr. Morgenthau said, in part: “The American people dedicated their resources and manpower to the destruction of the menace that Hitler represented to our security and freedom. It is now equally their will that those who were the first and most tragic victims shall have their fullest sympathy and support until they are able to stand on their own feet, to make their own way. I have accepted the General Chairmanship of the United Jewish Appeal because I regard it as the moral obligation of every American, man, woman and child to save from despair and destruction the pitiful remnant of Jews who remain alive in Europe.”
Hitherto the leadership of the UJA has been provided by three national chairman representing each of the constituent agencies: Rabbi Jonah B. Wise, Charles J. Rosenbloom and William Rosenwald.
