Attorney General Tom Clark, addressing the North Carolina Conference of Christians and Jews in Charlotte, N.C., during the week-end in connection with National Brotherhood Week, warned that fascist elements “before the war, during the war, and now are seeking to spread their poison of defeatism, anti-Semitism, and un-Americanism throughout our land.”
He labeled as “sedulous, scurrilous and servile copies of National Socialism” organizations such as the Columbians and Ku Klux Klan. Clark promised to fight such subversive elements “whenever they come into conflict with Federal Law.” He pointed out that America had grown great through the efforts of “no single race, class or religion.” He said descendants of immigrants, “of every nationality, of every creed, and of every color have enriched and annobled our national if for the greater good of all, Peace with our sister-nations is unobtainable if we cannot have peace at home. If we cannot be friends with our fellow-Americans we cannot be friends with the world,” Clark soncluded.
Clark also joined in presentation of the Carolina Israelite award.”for distinguished service in the furthering of human rights and inter-faith amity” which was presented to Dr. Frank Porter Graham, president of the University of North Carolina, and a member of the President’s Committee on Civil Rights.
