American Jewish Congress Opposes Bill to Grant Federal Funds for Religious Education

The American Jewish Congress today expressed vigerous opposition to the Aiken Bill, which would grant Federal funds to religious schools, at a public hearing of the Senate Education and Labor Committee.

The organization insisted that such grants are “inconsistent with the American principle of separation of church and state.” At the same time the A.J.C. supported the Taft Bill for Federal aid to education. Reading a statement for Dr. Stephen S. Wise, who is ill, Dr. David Petegorsky, executive director, said: “We believe that the Taft Bill if enacted into law and honestly administered as we are sure it will be, will guarantee that no race discrimination will be practiced in conferring its benefits.”
