The Washington section of the United Jewish appeal opened its $2,000,000 drive here last night with a “special gifts dinner” at which 200 Jewish business men and professional men, who pledged $781,000, heard Rabbi Abba Hillel Silver, president of the Z.O.A., urge the United States to take a positive stand in the United Nations for free and unrestricted immigration into Palestine.

This policy, Dr. Silver declared, has been endorsed by every American president since Woodrow Wilson. If the United States takes a neutral stand, he said–“and there are people in this government who oppose taking a strong stand”–the U.N. (##)ebate on Palestine will bog down into utter futility and the situation in the Holy and will detericrate still further. The small nations are waiting to follow the U.S. lead on the Palestine question, he pointed out.
