The Canadian Government has granted permission to the Canadian Jewish Congress to bring into the country as immigrants 1,000 European Jewish war orphans under the age of 18, it was revealed here during the week-end.
Arrangements have been made to place the children in homes in provinces throughout the dominion. In 1942 the government granted similar permission for the Congress to bring in 500 children who were assembled in France, but the plan was upset when the Nazis occupied the Vichy-ruled areas.
Prime Minister William MacKenzie King, announcing a liberalization of the immigration policy recently, declared that Canada has a moral obligation to resettle a limited number of DP’s and refugees. He said that refugees who are admitted within the near future after being selected by a government commission which is now touring Europe, will be subtracted from the quota finally accepted by the government as Canada’s fair share in meeting the refugee problem. The liberalization of policy he announced permitted the entrance of families of married persons eligible to enter Canada by virtue of being relatives of residents.
