The American Zionist Emergency Council, in a statement expressing its agreement with President Truman’s appeal to U.S. citizens not to exacerbate the tense situation in Palestine, today suggested that “it would have been most helpful if the President were also to call upon the Mandatory Government to cease these illegal acts which are at the very root of the disturbances.” The American League for a Free Palestine, through its president ex-Senator Guy M. Gillette, also welcomed the President’s statement, but declared that to its knowledge American citizens were not provoking the violence in Palestine, which was caused by British policy.
