Francis Cardinal Spellman today announced his support of the Stratton Bill, which calls for the admission of 400,000 DP’s to the U.S. over a period of four years.
In a message to the Citizens Committee on Displaced Persons, which is backing the measure, Cardinal Spellman recalled that two years after V-E Day 1,000,000 persons are still in camps and barracks, and voiced the hope that America “will stand staunch before the people of the earth as a shining example of unselfish devotion to the ideal that has made us a great nation; the Christian ideal of liberty in harmonious unity, builded of respect for God’s image in man and every man’s right to life, liberty and happiness. I pray that, loyal to these God-inspired principles upon which our own government was founded, we open our hearts and our doors to these starving, suffering peoples and lead the way for all the United Nations to follow,” the Catholic prelate added.
