The Rumanian War Ministry has ordered an investigation into charges by Gen. George Stavrescu, one of the defendants in the Jassy massacre trials, that Gen. Constantin Sanatescu, first Premier of Rumania following the liberation, was implicated in the pogrom.
According to the newspaper Romania Liberal, Stavrescu, who will be tried again on the same charge, claims that he received orders for the pogrom from the headquarters of the Thired Rumanian Army, which was commanded at the time by Sanatescu. The charges have created a sensation here because Sanatescu, who was a leader of the forces which seized power following the collapse of the Antonescu pro-Nazi Government, was considered a leader of the democratic forces.
