A plan to convert the former Quoddy Village ?val training school here into a center for the training of European DP’s in serious trades and professions to permit them to proceed later to Latin American countries where they will take up jobs and permanenthomes, is now under consideration city officials here.
The plan, which has the approval of President Truman and is sponsored by nator Owen Brewster of Maine and a number of high Washington officials, was pro##sed by Frank Cohen, a New York Jewish industrialist. Mr. Cohen has secured promises from several Latin American governments that the refugees will be admitted into their countries on regular immigration visas after they complete training courses in the factory-schools which he will establish in Quoddy Village.
The project provides for the selection of several thousand displaced Jewish families who are now in camps, their transportation to this country for a temporary ?ay while the breadwinner is taught a trade, and finally their transportation to Latin American country which needs the skill which the refugees have acquired. The Quoddy Village Plan has the wholehearted support of Clark Clifford, President ruman’s advisor on DP problems.
Ralph T. Colwell, City Manager of Eastport, yesterday told newsmen that ## is satisfied with the proposal. Quoddy Village has been under the control of the War Assets Administration for over a year. The city of Eastport will exercise its rights to claim the village gratis, under a special WAA regulation, and will ?hen turn it over to Mr. Cohen who will operate it as a charitable foundation. Mr. chen, who is well-known in Zionist circles, set up the ESCO Foundation which actively supports Jewish educational projects.
