The American Jewish Conference today termed the majority UNSCOP report a “compromise”, predicting that it would “be received with (##)led feelings by Jews in the United States.”
At the same time, the Conference stressed that now “a great moral responsibility rests upon the United States Government, arising out of its previous commitments which it dare not shirk.” The United States, it continued, “must take the lead con(##)tent with past American policy for, only in this way can it ensure an immediate affirmative solution by the General Assembly of the United Nations.”
The Conference declared that despite the fact that the majority report does (##) call for a Jewish state in all of Palestine, as requested by an overwhelming (##)ber of American Jews, and despite the fact that it excludes western Galiles and (##) Jewish section of Jerusalem, it “merits serious consideration and prompt action (##) the General Assembly.” The statement welcomed the recommendation that 150,000 (##) be admitted to Palestine within the next two years.
Dr. Stephen S. Wise, president of the American Jewish Congress, said last (##) that the majority report “has furnished the basis on which a solution may be (##) He called on Great Britain to announce that it will abide by the U.N. (##) Assembly’s recommendations and to admit immediately to Palestine the 4,400 (##) refugees and the Jews now interned on Cyprus.
