The memory of several hundred men and women who gave their lives in the service of their fellow-Jews abroad while working with the Joint Distribution Committee, was honored on the eve of Yom Kippur with the unveiling of two bronze plaques at the world headquarters of the JDC here.
Rabbi Joseph Lookstein, a member of the JDC executive committee, officiated at the unveiling ceremony, dedicating the two plaques, one honoring the heroism of hundreds of deceased European staff members and volunteers–of whom no accurate tally can be made because of the systematic extermination of Jewish leadership during the Hitler era–and a second marking the memory of Americans who died overseas while in JDC service.
