The progress of Europe’s 1,500,000 Jews towards recovery may be dissipated during the coming winter months unless increased aid is immediately forthcoming, it was reported here tonight by two leading authorities on the overseas scene addressing a local meeting of the Joint Distribution Committee. Dr. ##sador Lubin, former U.S. Commissioner on Labor Statistics and special assistant to President Roosevelt, now U.S. delegate on the U.N. Economic and Social Council and a member of the JDC reconstruction committee; and Moses A. Leavitt, JDC executive vice-chairman, addressed the meeting which was attended by 150 members of the JDC board of directors and national council from Washington, as well as leaders of the Washington United Jewish Appeal.
“Only the immediate provision of greatly increased supplies of food, clothing and medicines by the JDC can help Europe’s Jews survive the winter and emerge strong enough to continue their progress towards revival,” Lubin stated. Leavitt, pointed out that most of Europe’s Jews live in areas which will not receive assistance under the Marshall Plan. In addition, he said, I.R.O. programs are inadequate to are for##ost of the surviving Jews on the Continent.
