Sir Alexander Cadogan, head of the British delegation at the United Nations, today called on U.N. Secretary General Trygve Lie and discussed with him various problems concerning the relations to be established between the U.N. Implementation Commission and the British authorities in Palestine. It is understood that Sir Alexander will meet with the five-man commission prior to its departure for Jerusalem.
The threat of violence in Palestine will be brought to the attention of the U.N. Security Council on Thursday, it was stated here today by United Nations officials who are keeping a close watch on the developments there.
When the Security Council meets, it will have on its agenda an official communication from the U.N. Secretariat relaying the partition decision of the General assembly and emphasizing that the Assembly asked the Council to act if peace were threatened.
The U.S. delegation at the United Nations today indicated that the State Department has prepared a list of possible candidates for the governorship of Jerusalem. it is believed that the final choice will be the national of a small power. His salary would be about $20,000 a year, according to the Washington plan.
Well informed circles today expressed their belief that the Arab demonstrations in Palestine were organized by agents of the ex-Mufti with a view to creating a state of tension which would hamper the activities of the United Nations commission. The general feeling here is that the exiled ex-Mufti is directing the anti-Jewish violence from his headquarters in Syria, against the will of the majority of the Palestine Arab population.
