President Truman Hails Ort on 25th Anniversary; Lehman, Backer Report on Programs

President Truman today commended the ORT for? inestimable assistance” in helping Jewish refugees to “become once again dig? and self-supporting members of society.” In a message to the 25th anniversity celebration of the American ORT Federation, the President said that the ORT methods and outstanding success they have achieved are examples of the opportunities ? exist for useful and constructive work among the people of all faiths who may ? be suffering from the terrible effects of war.”

Former Governor Herbert H. Lehman, addressing the conference, cited the ORT’s ? in preparing thousands of refugees to help in building the Jewish state. He ? the ORT to intensify its vocational training projects for the thousands of Jews in the DP camps who will have to wait until Palestine is able to receive them.

George Backer, president of the ORT, in reviewing the organization’s activities in Europe, South America, South Africa and U.S., declared that by the end of ? year 30,000 persons will have been trained in industrial and agricultural vo?ons, with more than 26,000 of these residing in the DP camps. Other speakers ?uded Dr. Samuel Gringaust, chairman of the Jewish Central Committee of Germany.
