The Jewish Central Committee of Germany today charged that police and American troops “mishandled” the raid last week on the Heidenheim DP’s camp for Jews in which one Jew died as a result of bayonet wounds.
The U.S. Army failed to follow the proper procedure in raiding the camp, the committee said, pointing out that an official of the I.R.O. is required to accompany the troops on all such occasions. I.R.O. officials here have filled a sharp protest with I.R.O. headquarters in Geneva, stating that the raid would have been a routine inspection had representatives of the organization been present.
The Committee’s report on the incident charged that U.S. troops manhandled the Jewish refugees in the camp and robbed a number of them, taking watches and other small sized items. The troops carried rifles with fixed bayonets; the report said a procedure which it described as unusual since only rifles are normally used in such raids. The Committee reiterated an earlier charge that the Jew, Israel Gluz, ?ied because he was permitted to bleed for an hour before he was given medical attention.
The committee statement also charged that the Army failed to correct its official announcement in which it claimed that printing presses used to produce counterfeit money were seized at the camp, which was completely Inaccurate since no such machinery was discovered, “Stare and Stripes,” the unofficial army newspaper in Germany and Austria, the Committee added, published only the Army’s official erroneous version of the raid.
