Less than one-quarter of the Jewish DP’s registered in Austria have been influenced sufficiently by recent events in Palestine or by other factors to ask emigration to countries other than Palestine, a survey here disclosed today.
Meanwhile, a large clandestine emigration from Austrian DP camps to Palestine is proceeding–mainly of young and able-bodied men and women. Authorities here estimate that 5,000 men and women have left for Palestine during the past six months, including about 1,000 young men last month.
Of the 5,995 displaced Jews who have registered with the Joint Distribution Committee here for emigration to 38 countries other than Palestine, most are described as representing families either of elderly people or with very young children, who wish to emigrate to countries where they have relatives or friends to help them reestablish themselves. There are about 24,000 Jewish DP’s and refugees registered in Austria. About 18,000 of them are registered for emigration to Palestine.
Of those DP’s wanting to emigrate elsewhere than Palestine almost half, or 2,261, have expressed a desire to go to the United States. The next largest group in this category, numbering 700, asked for resettlement in Canada.
