The State Department revealed today that the American Minister in Lebanon, Lovell Pinkerton, intervened with the Lebanese Government then he learned that there was a possibility that U.S. citizens aboard the Marine Carp would be seized at Beirut and interned by the Lebanese authorities.
A spokesman for the State Department refused to commit himself on what sort of action the U.S. Government may take after receiving official confirmation of the seizure at Beirut of American passengers en route to Israel. He emphasized that they were well carrying valid American passports and revealed that an officer of the U.S. Legation was sent by Pinkerton aboard the ship and remained there during the search and examination of the Jewish passengers by the Lebanese police.
