Haganah Denies Arab Report Hebrew University and Hadassah Hospital Have Surrendered

A Haganah communique tonight denied an Amman broad-cart claiming that the Hebrew University and Hadassah Hospital atop Mt. Scopus in Jerusalem have surrendered to Arab legion forces. The communique termed the broadcast “completely without foundation.”

The Provisional Government of Israel issued an announcement today stating that former Jewish dissident military groups are receiving “a full share of funds, arms and equipment” now that they are incorporated into the Israeli Defense Army. Therefore, the announcement said, separate fund-raising collections for these groups, both in Palestine and abroad, are unnecessary and unauthorized.

In Jerusalem, the Chief Rabbinate has ordered the reading of Psalm 79 at Shavuoth religious services throughout the world next week “to give solemn public expression to the poignant grief and pain caused by the destruction of the Scrolls of the Law and synagogues in the old City.

Meanwhile, it was learned here that the Gerer Rabbi, 92, sustained a severe heart attack while seeking cover in a shelter during the Arab Legion’s shelling of the Old City. Isaac Ben Zvi, president of the Jewish was National Council, announced today that the oldest Karaite synagogue in Jerusalem was destroyed in the Old City fighting and a priceless 13-century Torah disappeared in its ruins.
