Mayor O’dwyer Honored by U.n.a. at City Ball Rally; Receives Scroll from Gov. Lehman

A rally attended by several thousand persons on the steps of City Hall today marked the observance of June as United Jewish Appeal month in this city. Mayor William O’Dwyer, who was the principal speaker, was given a United Jewish Appeal scroll by ex-Governor Herbert H. Lehman for his activities on behalf of the state of Israel.

Dr. Joseph J. Schwartz, European director of the Joint Distribution Committee, who has just returned to the U.S., reported that the thousands of DP’s who will emigrate to Israel from Europe need continued support. Dr. Stephen S. Wise, president of the American Jewish Congress, presided at the rally.

Dr. Wise was honored at a. dinner of the United Jewish Appeal of Greater New York last night. Mrs. Eleanor Roosevelt joined other leaders in paying tribute to Dr. Wise’s efforts on behalf of the establishment of the Jewish state.

At the same time, the American Jewish Congress made awards to four publications–The Hew York Herald-Tribune, New York Post, PM and The Ration–“for their contribution to the advancement of justice and democracy by support of the establishment of the state of Israel.”
