The Nationalist newspaper in Cape-town, “Die Burger,” today published an editorial emphasizing that when Premier D.F. Malan recently received a delegation from the South African Board of Jewish Deputies, “he gave assurance to the deputation that the Nationalist Government will not discriminate against the Jewish community.”

The paper expressed the hope that this “will clear away any disquiet and uncertainty” which may exist in the Jewish community as a result of the Nationalists coming to power. The Board of Deputies was criticized by the paper for allowing “such feeling to obtain, in view of Premier Malan’s statement of October, 1947, denying that the Nationalists are anti-Semitic.”
