Dr. Emanuel Neumann, president of the Zionist Organization of America, reported today on the role which American Zionists played in helping to bring about the establishment of Israel. He addressed the opening session of the conference of the World Confederation of General Zionists and offered the suggestion that henceforth the Confederation should call itself the Progressive General Zionists, “since our program is very progressive.”

Dr. Abba Hillel Silver told the gathering that “no force can now destroy the state of Israel.” He also expressed approval of the over-all General Zionist program and emphasized that American Jewry would give all-out support to the Jewish state.

In his address opening the parley, Joseph Heftman editor of Haboker, expressed regrets over the “secession” of Group “A” from the General Zionist party. He said the non-participation of the “A” section–which is headed by Interior Minister Dr. Itzhak Gruenbaum–is unjustified “since the General Zionist program is progressive and democratic.” He appealed to the “A” Zionists to return to the ranks of the party.

A call for the formation of a united Orthodox front in the coming elections to Israel’s constituent assembly was issued here today by the conference of the Mizrachi Palestine Council, which opened hero last night. The appeal was made by David Zvi Pinkas, chairman of the Council, who urged all Orthodox groups–including the Agudas Israel and Agudah Laborites–to band together in the forthcoming elections. He said that such a united front could help to establish Israel on the basis of the Torah. It is understood that negotiations among all Orthodox groups to secure a united front are already well-advanced.

Addressing the conference this evening, world Mizrachi president Rabbi Meir Berlin demanded the internationalization of the city of Jerusalem He warned that annexation of the city by the Israeli Government would result in coding a section of Jerusalem to King Abdullah of Transjordan.
