In an attempt to protect law-abiding Greek Jews from being arrested for serving with the ELAS during the Nazi occupation of Greece, Public Security Minister Constantine Rendis today issued an order to police authorities clarifying the position of these Jews, many of whom have already been seized and deported to the Aegean Islands.

The order emphasizes that Jews need not be classified as Communists for serving with the EIAS since they were compelled to flee to the Communist-held hills in order to escape Nazi persecution or deportation to the death camps. Jewish leaders, in hailing the Minister’s order, expressed the hope that this move by the government will put an end to the numerous arrests of Jews which have been talking place recently only because these Jews lived in Communist-controlled territory during the Nazi regime.
