Legal immigration of Jewish displaced persons from Austria to Israel will get underway early next month when the first transport of 300 Jews leaves the United States zone for Israel.

The first 300 immigrants have been selected by Kurt Lewin, special representative of the Israeli Government, whose mission was approved by United States occupation authorities. Authorization to leave for Israel is expected any day.

According to Harold Trobe, director of the Joint Distribution Committee for Austria, preparations have been made for sending displaced persons to Israel at the rate of 1,000 a month. Within one year, he estimates the problems of resettling Jewish DP’s in Austria will be liquidated. Official figures show now a total of 18,000 Jewish DP’s in the three western occupation zones, but experts on the DP problem doubt if there are more than l4, 000 altogether.
