Benjamin Lazrus, noted Jewish leader, has accepted the post of chairman of the 31st annual campaign of the Federation of Jewish Philanthropies of New York, it was announced today by Ralph E. Samuel, president of the Federation. The Federation’s 1948 campaign will be officially launched on October 7th.

Accepting the campaign chairmanship, Lazrus said: “The financial problems that confront the Federation and its network of hospitals, health and welfare agencies as a result of four years of increasing costs and deficits are more than a menace to the affiliated institutions. These problems touch the lives of the thousands and thousands of people who each year turn to Federation’s institutions seeking help.”

As an indication of the seriousness of current financial difficulties, Lazrus disclosed that the Federation institutions had incurred, after their annual Federation allotments, a combined deficit for 1947-48 estimated at $2,100,000.
