The State Department today advised all potential immigrants to the United States now in Europe to register for visas under the existing immigration system so that they would be eligible for normal movement to America “in the event they should fail to meet all the qualification” to come an displaced persons under the DP law.
Applicants will be processed as soon as possible on a first-come, first-served basis. The State Department made it clear, however, that registration for visas will be under the existing immigration law of 1924 and not under the new DP act.
A report emanating from Frankfurt said today that the U.S. Government has lifted the ban on the immigration of Germans and Austrians to the United States, another report said that the American Military Government has commuted the life sentence of Ilso Koch, widow of a former commandant of the notorious Buchenwald death jump and a convicted war criminal in her own right, to four years imprisonment. Frau Koch, who will be freed some time next year under the terms of the sentence, was convicted last year by on American military court at Dachau. She was charged with responsibility for the death of thousands of Jewish and non-Jewish prisoners whose skins she later used for lampshades.
