Harry Greenstein, executive director of the Jewish Welfare Fund of Baltimore, has been appointed Advisor on Jewish Affairs to the American Military Government in Europe, it was announced today by Army Secretary Kenneth C. Royall. He succeeds William Haber, who returned recently to the U.S.
Mr. Greenstein, who is also executive director of the Associated Jewish Charities of Baltimore, made a study of displaced Jews in Europe last year at the request of Dr. Haber. In 1943, he was appointed by former Governor Herbert H. Lehman as director of welfare for the UNRRA for Greece, Albania and Yugoslavia and held that post for two years. At the outbreak of World War II he made a national survey of the refugee problem which led to the creation of the National Refugee Service.
A native of Baltimore, he was president of the Baltimore YM-YWRA from 1921 to 1931. For five years he was the president of the Baltimore Council of Social Agencies. He also served as national president of the American Association of Social Workers and of the National Conference of Jewish Social Welfare, and was the first person to be appointed State Relief Administrator for Maryland, serving under Governor Albert C, Ritchie and Harry L. Hopkins from 1933 to 1936.
