The extraordinary emergency conference called by the American Zionist Emergency Council here last night and attended by the leaders of 80 national Jewish organizations adopted a resolution expressing gratitude to President Truman and to the United States Government for “the Just and unequivocal position taken by them in connection with recent British moves in the Middle East,”
At the same time, the meeting decided to sponsor a Joint effort to draw American public opinion to the need of securing Israel “against any further attempts to interfere with the attainment of peace, progress and territorial stability in the Middle East.”
Aubrey S, Eban, chief Israeli delegate to the United Nations, addressing the conference, asserted that a restrained and “even reticent” attitude on the part of all governments and their representatives would best serve the causes of Israel and international peace. Emphasizing the importance of negotiations currently udder way between Israel and some Arab states, Eban said:
“The attention of the Government of Israel is entirely focused on negotiations now proceeding with Arab states. Israel attaches vital Importance to these negotiations and wishes ardently for their success. Despite the high feelings engendered by recent events, all governments and their representatives are clearly called upon to act and speak with the utmost restraint. All those who cherish the cause of Israel will, I feel sure, do everything in their power to emulate that restraint.”
Dr. Abba Hillel Silver, chairman of the American Zionist Emergency Council, said that British Foreign Secretary Ernest Bevin’s announcement on the release of the Jews on Cyprus is a “welcome, albeit very belated, step towards the rectification of a wrong which never should have been committed In the first place.”
