Home Secretary James Chuter Ede today banned all political processions in the London area for a period of three months. Ede’s action, announced in Commons, followed clashes yesterday between Mosleyites and anti-fascists’ which resulted from an attempt by the fascists to march through the East End of London.
The Home Secretary said that he “regretted” the necessity for this step and revealed that the Commissioner of Police felt that his powers were insufficient to prevent “serious public disorder.” Yesterday, in an attempt to protect the fascists who had a permit for their march, the police, mounted and on foot, repeatedly charged the anti-fascist demonstrators until they were all dispersed.
