Pope Pius XII today asked for the establishment of an international regime in Jerusalem in an encyclical letter dispatched to all Catholic bishops. Expressing satisfaction at the armistice in Palestine, the Pope declared that there was no real peace there. He invited the bishops to emphasize this situation to their congregations.
In addition to requesting internationalization for Jerusalem and its surroundings, the Pope’s letter asked for the safeguarding of all Holy Places in Palestine and free access of pilgrims to them; liberty for Catholic cultural institutions in the country; and conservation of the rights acquired there by Catholics.
