The U.N. Commission on Human Rights today began examination of the terms of reference of the Sub-commission on the Prevention of Discrimination and Protection of Minorities, working on the basis of a text prepared by a drafting committee, and aimed at clarifying and extending the scope of the present terms of reference.
Meanwhile, the British delegation asked the Sub-commission that a U.N. study of the protection of minorities be postponed until the next session. The Sub-commission now has on its agenda a United States proposal which would empower the group to undertake studies and make recommendations concerning the prevention of discrimination of any kind relating to human rights and fundamental freedoms and the protection of racial, national, religious and cultural minorities.
