The 17th biennial congress of the South African Jewish Board of Deputies closed here yesterday with a resolution expressing gratification at the Nationalist Government’s policy of non-discrimination against the Jews. However, the resolution scored the policy of the Transvaal Nationalist Party of excluding Jews from membership.

A second resolution hailed the admission of Israel to the United Nations, and the extension of de jure recognition to the Jewish state by the Government of South Africa. On the question of fund-raising, the convention decided to carry out two coordinated campaigns–one for local needs and another for overseas and Israeli needs.

Pointing out that although the Board is not a political body, another resolution declared that the Board would function to safeguard the rights of South African Jews against discrimination in any form. It also expressed the conviction that the welfare of the Jewish community as well as that of other sections of the population depends upon the preservation of democratic freedoms. Still another resolution urged the maintenance of non-denominational education.
