Arie Oren, Israeli consul in Italy, today visited the port of Bari, in southern Italy, from which immigrants sail for Israel, and several Jewish DP camps in the area. The Jewish community of the town tendered a reception for the consul, who was making his first visit to this area since his appointment as Israel’s representative.
In an address at the reception, which was attended by Italian civilian, naval and military officials, Mr. Oren disclosed that the Israeli legation In Italy is scheduled to be opened this month. During his visits to the Trani transient center and the Barletta permanent camp, both for Jews only, Mr. Oren was greeted by some 5,000 displaced Jews.
