A peaceful demonstration of about 100 unemployed immigrants carrying banners, “Work and Bread,” was held here today in the main streets of the city.
The demonstrators then marched to the headquarters of the Jewish Agency where a small deputation was received by members of the Agency executive. The Agency leaders promised the delegation that it would carry out a public words program to provide work for thousands of the newly-arrived immigrants.
The water supply system of Jerusalem will be enlarged as soon as possible, Daniel Auster, mayor of Jerusalem, announced today at a meeting of the Municipal Council. The Israeli Government, he said, has agreed to share the expenses involved. The second largest industrial center in Israel was inaugurated today at Nathanya. Among the plants that are located in this industrial section are an electrical equipment plant, another to produce penicillin and other biological preparations, metal processing shops and sawmills.
Among the governmental and industrial leaders present at the dedication ceremonies were Minister of the Interior Moshe Shapira and Finance Minister Eliezer Kaplan. Mr. Kaplan spoke briefly of the government’s policy of offering assistance to capital investors, and pledged that the government would import raw materials to keep Nathanya’s plants operating at top speed.
