Israeli Ambassador Eliahu Elath today conferred with George C. McGhee, Assistant Secretary of State for Near Eastern and African Affairs. In the hour-long parley, the two diplomats discussed the Lausanne peace talks and other “routine” matters.

After he left the State Department, the Israeli Ambassador was questioned about his reaction to the recent military coup in Syria. Mr. Elath told the newsmen that if the assassinations and overthrow of the former Arab regime had occurred earlier, the Security Council might not have lifted its arms embargo on the Near East. He added that he was “very much afraid that nothing could be more dangerous than pouring arms into that sensitive area.”
